| at a conference that Theoraaoizgtinn must consider howe2€œthelede2€9d view leadership. As a simple definition, leadership may simply beviewed as getting other peopleto do what you want. At adeeper level, leadership mayentail getting people to dowhat you want in an ethicalway that brings aboutfulfillment, respect, andsuccess. The healthiestoraaoizgtinns define successby more than the bottom line, and will likely ascribe tothis latter definition.- Theoraaoizgtinn must alsoconsider the extent to whichits code e2€œsinksine2€9d with employees. Is the code understood? Areits employees in a position toreceive the code, and how dotheir personal codes affectthis transmission? Do theemployees live the code, anddo customers recognize this?Zinni pointed out that Theresponsible leader mustrecognize that he/she isresponsible for the decisionsmade for him/her and thereforeanalyze the structure of howdecisions are made within theoraaoizgtinn. How arealternatives presented andwhat ethical bases fordecision making are utilized? It is imperative that feedbackis built into this system andthat the leaders are receptiveto this information. Thisfeedback helps the leadershipto understand whether theoraaoizgtinn works the waythey think it does.- At highlevels of seniority, decisionsbecome less clear, and thedecision-maker is often forcedto choose between the lesserof two evils or two goods.Because there are degrees ofgood and bad inherent in alldecisions, a consistentethical code is critical.e2€œDone2€™tconfuse hard work with goodwork, and hard decisions withgood decisions.e2€9d- Agood leader leads from thefront, being a part of whatthe group or team does. Theleader should only use his/herpower (e2€œBecauseI said soe2€9d) as a lastresort, and take time toensure buy-in andunderstanding. This can beaccomplished through listeningto concerns and being a mentorto the followers. (I sawthis on the Villanova website. I didn't take the timeto replace double quotes withsingle quotes. I actuallyheard Zinni speak onleadership elsewhere myselfvery interesting.) Perhapsthere are archival forumswhere people discuss issuessuch as the ones raised byZinni. I haven't seenany to date. (I onlysubscribe to A&A and lookin on a handful ofarchivist's blogs.)Iwould guess most readers ofthe blog know this, but LarryHackman once was director ofthe NARA -administered TrumanPresidential Library. A&AList members may remember mypraise in 2007 for his articlein the 2006 PublicHistorian. Thanks again, Kate, for writing about theArchivist vacancy and puttingup the poll. |
