Iwould add that most pastorsare simply passing along thetradition of theirdenomination or views of theirfavorite celebrity preachers.Sola Scriptura has virtuallybecome a dead slogan withinNorth American evangelicalism.For the sake of Christ'sChurch, let us hope that thespirit of that slogan will berecovered soon.2. Languagesare not mere codes. Aswonderful as moderntranslations can be, there aremany aspects to language thatcannot be brought out intranslation but can be broughtout in teaching. Does Godbless teaching fromtranslations by those with noknowledge of the Scriptures inthe original languages? Ofcourse! But why would we wantto pursue a second best courseby design?3. Knowing theBiblical languages actuallysaves time in preparingindividual Bible studies andsermons. This may seemcounter-intuitive to thestudent struggling through hissecond or third semester ofGreek when translating evensimple passages can bepainfully slow. If thatstudent presses on to actuallybeing able to read the Greek,Hebrew, and Aramaic; he willdiscover that this directcontact with the text willactually help him grasp thestructure and key thrust of atext with both greater speedand confidence then he couldin translation. The seriousstudent of Biblical languagesis able to access and uselexicons, technicalcommentaries, and the variousfruits of competent scholarswith not only greaterunderstanding but also greaterspeed than someone who islimited to comparing Englishtranslations of Scripture.Bestwishes,David
